Tour of Argonne National Laboratory - Wednesday, October 8, 2008
Argonne National Laboratory, chartered in 1946, is the nation's first national laboratory and one of the U.S. Department of Energy's largest research centers. A direct descendant of the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Lab, where the first controlled nuclear chain reaction was created, Argonne's first mission was to develop nuclear reactors for peacetime purposes. Over the years, Argonne's research has expanded to include many other areas of science and engineering from studies of the atomic nucleus, to global climate changes. Participants will see and learn several areas including the Center for Nanoscale Materials and the Advanced Photon Source.
